About Us

Vedder Research Librarian - Linda Hunt

Linda brings experience as a librarian, archivist, and historical society/museum administrator, as well as strong education credentials, to her position as Vedder librarian. She possesses a MLS degree from the Palmer School of C.W. Post College on Long Island and holds an Archival Certificate and Records Management Certificate from there as well. Prior to joining us she held a librarian position at Island Trees Public Library in Levittown, NY. Linda came on board in the Fall of 2013 and has been familiarizing herself with library collection, learning more about Greene County's history, and assisting researchers in their quest for information. She says "It is a wonderful opportunity to be able to work with this collection." 
Vedder Research Library Chairperson - Barbara Spataro

Barbara Spataro has lived in Greene County for 25 years. She initially became interested in local history as branch manager for the Palenville Library beginning in 1995. She completed her Masters of Library Science degree in 2002. She has worked as an elementary school librarian and is currently employed...
Greene County Historian - David Dorpfeld 

David has held the position of Greene County Historian for the past 5 years. He had a 40-year career with the state and federal governments as a management analyst and investigator. Born in Catskill, he has had a lifelong interest in Greene County history. He has served on the Greene County Historical Society board  as Treasurer for the past 30 years. Most recently, he co-authored a book with his wife Wanda Dorpfeld titled, Legendary Locals of Greene County.
Our holdings are continuously enriched by the donations of many generous individuals and organizations who place single items and entire collections in the care of this research library. If you are unsure about the records in your home, office, church or group, please contact VRL before discarding.

Volunteer Opportunities

Generally, no library experience is necessary. The hours are flexible and we will work with you to arrange a mutually agreeable schedule. The following is a list of different volunteer opportunities:

MANUSCRIPT ASSISTANT prepares handwritten listing of scrapbook, file or box content

CLERICAL ASSISTANT types, transcribes handwritten notes into a computer file

LIBRARY ASSISTANT enjoys working with the public; helps walk-in  clients in finding and use of library collection; regularly checks shelves to ensure that book order on the shelf matches catalog listing; assists in re-shelving materials in the library collection; prepares handwritten listing of library held magazines

NEWSPAPER REFERENCE ASSISTANT able to climb a step ladder, identifies newspapers owned by the library: microfilm and paper (hard copy), identifies duplicates, microfilm and paper overlaps, ensures that hard copy newspaper order on the shelf matches prepared listing

RESEARCH ASSISTANT experience in writing descriptive paragraphs, proofreading, familiarity with Microsoft Word; writes and files finding aids such as shelf-list cards - cards in the card catalog
